Medicine Hat, Alberta — Travellers Wanted!

Medicine Hat inherited its name from the native word “Saamis” which is loosely translated as “medicine man’s hat.” A number of legends tell this story, one of which is beautifully depicted in a sculptured brick mural at City Hall.

A warm, vibrant, feel-good city with the attitude and natural backdrop to match, Medicine Hat boasts more days of sunshine per year (330!) than any other city in Canada. Hot summer nights and chinook-cheered winter days define a scenic landscape anchored by the broad and mighty South Saskatchewan River, carved coulees, and rolling prairies. Wildlife thrives along the river’s edge and in park spaces, as well as school yards and backyards. The sun rises and sets in glorious displays of colour, and stars light up the night sky.

With a full slate of food-related events designed to showcase the local bounty, Medicine Hat’s culinary scene has now hit a critical mass. From fresh micro greens to grass-fed beef, local producers have Medicine Hat’s short order cooks, backyard grillers and red seal chefs in steady supply. The city also boasts 5 friendly, independent coffee shops.
